Patna: Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 136th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on Sunday highlighted a “waste to wealth” initiative from Sitamarhi, where discarded single-use plastic is being recycled into benches for public spaces.Modi described plastic pollution as a serious environmental challenge and underlined the need for responsible waste management. “We all know that plastic pollution poses a major challenge to the global environment today. Waste from single-use plastic continues to harm nature for years; therefore, proper disposal of plastic is crucial,” PM Modi said.Referring to the Sitamarhi model, he said the district had shown how waste could be converted into useful community assets.

“A wonderful example of ‘waste to wealth’ has emerged in Sitamarhi. Here, waste is being recycled to create attractive benches. Approximately 40 kg of single-use plastic is used to make one bench. These benches are strong, durable, comfortable, and eco-friendly. They are installed in govt schools, parks, and public spaces. This is also raising awareness about environmental conservation,” the PM said.He added that the effort was strengthening both awareness and livelihoods. “This initiative is also raising awareness among people about environmental conservation. Both local bodies and the district administration play a vital role in this effort. That’s also generating local employment opportunities. This initiative in Sitamarhi shows us that ‘reduce, reuse, and recycle’ is no longer just a slogan but is becoming a part of our lives,” the PM said.Chief minister Samrat Choudhary, who listened to the broadcast with BJP functionaries in Patna’s Jakkanpur area, expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for recognising Sitamarhi’s innovative model. He said the mention in ‘Mann Ki Baat’ was a matter of immense pride for Bihar.Choudhary said Modi’s appreciation would boost the morale of local administrations and rural communities across the state. He noted that the Sitamarhi initiative reflected the strength of public participation and grassroots innovation in addressing ecological challenges, while turning the 3Rs into daily practice and creating jobs for local youth in the district itself.
