Grieving Family Outraged by Crematorium Clerk’s Insensitive Remarks |

SURAT: An argument between an elderly clerk of Ashwini Kumar Crematorium and comments sparked controversy after a video of the argument went viral on Friday.
In the video, the clerk is heard telling a person, who brought a dead body for cremation, “You should have come later post afternoon. What would I do if you feel like coming for cremation along with others (multiple bodies brought for cremation at the same time)? You come on Diwali when staff members are on holiday and do not ready to make adjustment for a few minutes.”
Following the incident, the crematorium officials apologised for the behaviour and ensured that it will never be repeated.
The crematorium officials claimed that the incident happened when the majority of staff was on holiday and at the time of change in duty.
In the incident, relatives of Mina Rathod shot the video of the clerk arguing with them over the delay in the start of the cremation process and shared it on social media.
The family went to the crematorium on Thursday afternoon at around 12 noon. The clerk on duty asked them to wait for a while since other staff members were on leave for Diwali. After waiting for some time, the relatives went to the office again with a video recording on and made a video of the argument.
“It was an unfortunate incident and we apologise to the relatives of the deceased. They were already in pain due to death and our staff should not have behaved in this way,” said a crematorium official.
The trustees of Narayan Trust that runs the crematorium claimed that the behaviour was not proper.
“We have instructed all the staff to behave nicely with those coming for cremation. The visitors have already lost someone dear and are upset. In such times, our staff should behave carefully with them,” said a trust official.
