Joint efforts: 4 hand surgeries done at GMC

Panaji: Surgeons from the Groupe International Chirurgiens Amis de la Main, a Swiss foundation based in Lugano, in collaboration with GMC, conducted four hand surgeries at GMC on Monday.
The first patient operated on had a malignancy, the second a deformity of the hand, the third a tendon injury, and the fourth excess skin on the hand, head of the department of plastic surgery and burns, Yuri Dias Amborcar, said.
The dean of GMC, S Bandekar, said the hand surgery camp is the second such collaboration at GMC. The last camp was conducted six months ago.
The team operates complex cases of patients suffering from congenital deformities of the hand, rheumatoid arthritis, those who suffered burns, and those with nerve injuries, among others.
The coordinator of the foreign team said the experts from GICAM will have regular camps at GMC and will create a fellowship where they will come and teach interested GMC students.
Goa govt, through the public health department, signed an MoU with GICAM to set up the hand surgery unit and centre of excellence at the superficiality block at GMC. The unit will manage elective and emergency cases regarding hand and upper limb conditions. The unit will have surgical, rehabilitation, and prosthetic divisions.
