In a late-night operation, Kurukshetra police arrested two armed criminals who were allegedly roaming the city with the intent to commit a serious crime. The arrest followed a brief but intense encounter during which the suspects opened fire on the police team and were injured in the legs in retaliatory fire.
According to inspector Surender Kumar, in-charge of crime investigation agency-1 (CIA), the operation took place during a routine patrol as per special instructions issued by Kurukshetra SP Varun Singla to increase vigilance and crackdown on criminal activities in the district. Acting on a tip-off, the police team intercepted two suspects on a motorcycle near Sharifgarh along the National Highway-44. The duo, later identified as Abhijot from Kurukshetra and Sonu from Patiala, Punjab, were found carrying illegal firearms.
“When the team signalled them to stop for checking, the suspects attempted to flee and fired at the police with an intent to kill,” said inspector Kumar. In the retaliatory fire by police, both suspects were shot in the leg and subsequently subdued.
The police recovered one country-made pistol (.32 bore), one country-made gun (.315 bore), and 13 live cartridges from the accused. The injured men were first taken to Shahabad hospital and later referred to LNJP district civil hospital in Kurukshetra for treatment. Authorities are currently investigating their criminal backgrounds.
Kurukshetra SP Varun Singla commended the police team’s alertness and bravery. “Maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety is our top priority. Anti-social elements who threaten the peace of society will not be spared under any circumstances,” he stated.
