Zarna Garg says she got into trouble for having a ‘big mouth’: ‘If there’s any negative influence in India, it must have come from America’

Zarna Garg, Indian-American stand-up comedian and screenwriter, is stealing the spotlight for her recent revelation about a personal ad she had posted on an Indian singles website. The stand-up comedian, who built a successful career and settled in the United States, shared how she was initially criticised for having a ‘big mouth’ in the country.
During her recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she shared a small anecdote about how she named her memoir ‘This American Woman’. “Because my whole life, before I ever stepped foot in America, I got in trouble for having a big mouth and having opinions and being argumentative. And any time I voiced a preference, people were like, ‘Who do you think you are, an American woman?’ Because if there’s any negative influence in India, it must have come from America.” Her statement left everyone in laughter.

She dedicated the book to all American women, “because they taught me that I have a voice and I have a right to use it. And now I’m so American, I even monetise it,” she added.
During the same chat, she shared how she met her husband 27 years ago through a personal ad she posted on a website. “In the summer of 1997, when I was a twenty-two-year-old law student in Cleveland, Ohio, I put up a personal ad on an Indian singles website:
To some, I am too short or too plump, too dark or too argumentative. But enough about me. This is what I need from you: A husband and a partner, somebody who is ambitious but not ruthless, confident but not arrogant, and humble but not timid.
Most of all, he is honest.
I am on a mission to build a very successful life, and you must be mad to go with me. Only contact me if you want to get married.
(NO FRIENDS!)
Kindly include your most recent tax returns and medical records.”
Her note left the crowd curious and amused.

At the same time, many Indian viewers praised her in the comment box for appearing on the international show in a traditional kurta set paired with a bindi. Another of her statements—“We are India, we do not believe in fun”—also took netizens on a fun ride.
On the work front, Zarna was last seen in ‘A Nice Indian Boy’, an American romantic comedy.
