Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana is shaping up to be one of Indian cinema’s most ambitious projects, bringing together an epic ensemble cast led by Ranbir Kapoor and Yash. As anticipation builds, actress Indira Krishnan—who plays Kaushalya, mother of Lord Ram—offers an exciting glimpse behind the scenes, revealing the film’s staggering scale, its use of 86 cameras, and the very VFX technology once used in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. In a conversation with NDTV, the actress opened up about her experience working on Ramayana. She praised production house Prime Focus and the VFX team for pulling off the film’s massive scale, noting how challenging it was to bring such a large ensemble cast together in a single frame and execute high-level visual effects. She also lauded director Nitesh Tiwari, calling him “a man of visuals” for his grand cinematic vision.
Recalling a memorable moment from the shoot, Indira spoke about being stunned by the advanced VFX technology used during her body measurements for Ramayana. The setup, which involved 86 cameras flashing simultaneously, was the same cutting-edge system previously used in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. The scale and sophistication of the technology left her completely amazed. She also shared how the process went far beyond routine costume fittings. She was introduced to a special VFX setup originally used in Interstellar, which involved 86 cameras capturing her from every angle. Indira explained that the team was meticulously collecting data to create younger versions of the characters. She highlighted the attention to detail in portraying Kaushalya—right from her walk to her posture—emphasizing that the character was shaped through grace and restraint rather than dramatic dialogue.Indira Krishnan, who earlier shared screen space with Ranbir Kapoor in Animal as Rashmika Mandanna’s mother, fondly recalled a moment from the sets. She mentioned how, during a casual conversation, Rashmika expressed that she wished Indira had played her mother again. However, Indira had a different take—she said she now wanted to play Ranbir’s mother instead, a wish that eventually came true with Ramayana.Exactly two years after that conversation on the sets of Animal, Indira was cast as Kaushalya in Ramayana. When she arrived at the office, Ranbir Kapoor reminded her of their earlier exchange, pointing out how her wish to play his mother had come true. The moment felt surreal to her, as a casual remark had unexpectedly turned into reality. The first instalment of Ramayana is scheduled to release on Diwali 2026, with the second part set to arrive a year later on Diwali 2027.
