NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Delhi government, city police chief, and municipal commissioner regarding the deaths of three civil services aspirants in a flooded basement of a coaching center.
The NHRC has requested a detailed report within two weeks. Additionally, the Delhi chief secretary has been asked to survey the number of coaching centers operating in violation of norms across the city.
The NHRC stated that it has “taken suo motu cognisance of media reports that three students drowned in the flooded basement library of a prominent civil services coaching centre in Delhi on July 27.” Reports indicated that numerous complaints about waterlogging had been made to the authorities, but “no action was taken.”
Expressing serious concern, the commission remarked that the news report’s contents suggest negligence by the concerned authorities.
The NHRC also acknowledged the death of another civil services aspirant in Delhi’s Patel Nagar area. It was reported that a few days ago, another aspirant died from electrocution while crossing a waterlogged street, highlighting further negligence by the authorities.
“The commission has taken suo motu cognisance of it,” the statement mentioned.
In response to these incidents, the NHRC demanded that the Delhi chief secretary ascertain the exact number of such institutes and their adherence to prescribed norms. The report should include every detail of these institutes, including pending complaints and actions taken by the concerned department.
These developments come after three students lost their lives due to drowning in a flooded basement library and another student succumbed to electrocution, prompting serious concerns about safety and administrative oversight in Delhi’s educational infrastructure.
