KATHMANDU: Nepal police on Friday said 51 people, including an Indian national and three of their personnel, have been “confirmed dead” in the anti-govt protests that roiled the Himalayan kingdom in recent days.Nepal police co-spokesperson Ramesh Thapa said Friday “the deceased included 21 protesters, nine prisoners who tried to flee from jails, three policemen and 18 others”. He, however, didn’t elaborate on the deaths. The deceased Indian national was identified as Rajesh Gola, 51, who came to Nepal with her husband Ramveer Gola, a transporter from Ghaziabad, on Sept 7. She was staying at a high-end hotel in Kathmandu when it was torched by protesters on Sept 9 night. Trapped inside the room on the 4th floor, she tried to climb down from a window using bed sheets tied together, but slipped and fell on the ground.“A total of 36 bodies were kept at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj, where post-mortem examinations began on Friday. Nearly 1,500 people were injured during the protests, and 1,000 of them reached home after receiving treatment,” said Thapa. Police said 17 bodies were found from different parts of the country on Thursday and Friday. Police also issued a public notice, urging citizens to share evidence related to the protests. “The evidence could be videos, photos or social media links documenting incidents of arson, loot and public harassment. The identity of those sharing such evidence will be kept secret,” it said.Earlier in the day, police spokespersonBinod Ghimire, said over 12,000 prisoners of the 13,500 prisoners who had escaped from jails during the protest are still at large. Amid attempts to nab them, the administration of Nakkhu prison in Lalitpur appealed to the inmates to “surrender immediately”. This came even as the curfew in Kathmandu valley was relaxed on Friday. People were allowed to venture out from 6am to 11am and from 5pm to 7pm. However, major roads and public places remained deserted, with not many venturing out, except journalists and tourists.
