Recent unrest in Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, triggered by specific issues like social media bans and shortages, highlights deeper frustrations with corruption and inequality
Most Indians, let’s face it, are neither aware of nor interested in Nepalese politics. Stereotypes abound — that Nepalese people are gentle, peace-loving people who keep to themselves, and are generally good friends with India. Despite open borders, there’s never really been any major conflict with Nepal.
And yet, earlier this month, Nepal’s Gen Z managed to topple their govt. The spark? A ban on social media platforms. Take away the digital lifeline of a generation raised online, and the backlash was inevitable. What began as protests in early Sept escalated into violent clashes and even an attack on Parliament. The PM resigned, an interim govt has taken charge, and elections are due in March 2026.
