Four undertrial prisoners assaulted a police naik inside a police van at the Kalyan sessions court

KALYAN: Four undertrial prisoners assaulted a cop inside a police van on the premises of the Kalyan sessions court earlier this week after allegedly being asked to move to the back of the vehicle. The cop sustained minor injuries. Police said the four from Ulhasnagar—Akash Valmiki, Ganesh Moretiya, Yoginder Moretiya and Vivek Yadav, all of whom face multiple criminal cases—got into the police van after their case hearings to be taken back to Aadharwadi jail in Kalyan. Police naik Kishor Petre, who was escorting them, told them to make space for other undertrials, which allegedly prompted them to hurl abuses at him. He said the four grabbed him by the collar and assaulted him. One of the accused allegedly threw a water bottle and a food packet at his face, while another struck him near the ear. Despite repeated efforts by police personnel defuse the situation, the undertrials refused to cooperate. Kalyan ACP Kalyanji Ghete said an FIR has been filed against the four for the attack.
