Anupam Kher recalls chaos after trying marijuana and consuming bhang at drama school: ‘I felt as if the road was running or the car was running’ |

Date:

Veteran actor Anupam Kher, with a 40-year career, shared past marijuana and bhaang experiences on a podcast. He watched a plane to Heathrow after drags, feeling the road “run” in his car. At drama school, bhaang made him laugh 8 hours.

Anupam Kher started his acting career in the 1980s and has been a significant figure in cinema for over four decades. The film sector has often been criticized for glamorizing drug use, with many actors admitting to experimenting with these substances. Recently, Anupam opened up about having used marijuana in the past. He also recalled consuming bhaang during Holi festivities but said he decided not to repeat it again.

Marijuana plane-watching memory

Remembering his marijuana on Unfiltered by Samdish podcast, Anupam chuckled as he described the surreal moment: “I think I must have taken two drags, and then I looked up at the sky. A plane must have taken off from the airport, so I started watching it. I kept watching it until it became a tiny dot in the sky. And I think I kept looking at it until it must have landed at Heathrow Airport.” He went on to say, “I had gone crazy. And the same day, when I sat in my car, I felt as if the road was running or the car was running.

Bhang chaos at drama school

In the same discussion, Kher recalled trying bhang while he was a student at the National School of Drama. “When I tried it, I swore I would never do it again, because I laughed for eight hours straight.” He described the amusing scene in the NSD hostel where his fellow students, also under the influence, were on the terrace warning the warden, “The army is coming.” He added, “I kept telling them I would die laughing and begged them to save me.

Unanswered pleas in high haze

He further shared that his calls for help went unanswered despite his persistence. He later realized his high state had turned his speech into total nonsense. “And I kept waiting for my friend to reply, wondering why he wasn’t answering me. It was exactly like how they show things in Jim Carrey’s film The Mask. But after that, I never touched it again.”

Latest directorial venture

Meanwhile, Anupam Kher was last seen in ‘Tanvi the Great’, a 2025 Hindi drama film that he also directed. It stars Kher as Colonel Pratap Raina alongside debutant Shubhangi Dutt as Tanvi, an autistic woman pursuing her late father’s dream at Siachen Glacier.
