Actor–dancer Siddharth Nigam has added a striking new chapter to his artistic journey with his live performance debut in Kaneez, a lavish Broadway-style musical that opened to thunderous applause in Mumbai. Known to audiences since his breakout as a child actor, Nigam has steadily transitioned from television to film and now to theatre, an evolution marked by ambition, discipline and a hunger to grow. Kaneez itself is a milestone: a grand theatrical production blending romance, drama, sweeping music and large-scale choreography. The show featured an ensemble led by Jayaa Bhatacharrya, Raayo S. Bakhirta, Noyrika Bhatheja, Kirti Killedar and Gulki Joshi, with familiar industry faces including Abhishek Nigam, Himanshu Soni, Nivedita Basu and Rits Badiani attending the spectacular opening night. In this exclusive interview, Nigam speaks about stepping into theatre, his evolving approach to choosing projects, and the amusing weight of carrying one of Bollywood’s most famous surnames. Tell us about your theatre musical Kaneez — how did this begin, and what drew you to theatre? Kaneez came to me at a time when I was craving something that pushed me creatively. I’ve always loved performing—acting, dancing, expressing emotion through movement—but theatre has a raw, magical energy that nothing else compares to. When this Broadway-style show came my way, it felt like the perfect opportunity to explore that world. The process has been beautiful; it’s taught me patience, precision and the importance of being fully present in every moment on stage. You’ve moved from television to bigger silver-screen opportunities. How do you choose your projects now, and what are you most excited about? I’m at a point where I want every project to help me grow, not only as an actor but as a person. I look for stories with depth—roles that give me something new to explore. Right now, I’m excited about my upcoming work: one web series for Amazon, a theatrical film, and another web series with a major production house. I can’t reveal details yet, but each role is very different and has something exciting to offer. Your surname often draws comparisons with one of India’s biggest singers. Any interesting anecdotes? (Laughs) Yes, people keep asking if I’m related to Sonu Nigam, but no—it’s just a coincidence. I take it as a compliment because I’ve grown up admiring his music. It’s funny, but also poetic, because music has always been a big part of my life. So even though we’re not family, the association feels special in its own way.
