The summit is taking place against the backdrop of Trump’s threats to take control of Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory in the Arctic Ocean, citing national security concerns. Washington’s European allies have rallied behind Greenland and Denmark. In response, Trump announced 10% tariffs on Denmark and seven other European countries supporting Greenland and Denmark. The tariffs will take effect on February 1 and rise to 25% starting June 1.Trump, who began his second and final White House term in January last year, has also spoken about “annexing” Canada, America’s northern neighbour, and making it the “51st state” of the United States. He also imposed tariffs that have hit key Canadian sectors such as steel, aluminium, autos, and lumber, with Ottawa imposing retaliatory tariffs.
