AMMA is facing fresh turmoil after executive member Tini Tom questioned the power structure inside the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists and called the president a “rubber stamp.” The controversy comes amid a workplace harassment complaint, employee dismissals, a security staff member’s allegation of “injustice,” and the resignation of joint secretary Ansiba Hassan. The row has put the Malayalam film body’s leadership under close scrutiny.
AMMA power row deepens after Tini Tom’s remarks
According to the Deccan Chronicle, Tini Tom told reporters on Friday that AMMA’s administrative powers rest mainly with the general secretary. He said the president, vice president, and joint secretary have no real authority under the current bylaws.Tom said this setup was unacceptable and called for rule changes. He accused the president of being a “rubber stamp” and said the organization needs a structure that allows office bearers to participate in key decisions. The dispute grew after the termination of a front-office manager, which triggered criticism within the association. Many members said the issue showed the current leadership’s lack of administrative experience.
Office manager’s complaint and Ansiba Hassan’s resignation add pressure
Apart from the general secretary and treasurer, other office bearers were reportedly not involved in major decisions. These included the dismissal of the front office manager and security staff. Reports also said new employees were hired without the knowledge of other panel members. The leadership came under pressure after a staff member filed a police complaint alleging workplace harassment. She said her duty hours were from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but she had to work until midnight. She alleged that Treasurer Unni Sivapal usually arrived around 5 p.m., which forced her to remain in the office late at night. She also claimed she was asked to arrange food for the treasurer’s daughter on a day when the treasurer was on leave. The executive committee later revoked the termination of the former office manager because the committee had not approved it. A security staff member also submitted a letter alleging “injustice.”In another setback, the executive committee accepted joint secretary Ansiba Hassan’s resignation. The actor is preparing for the release of her upcoming movie ‘Drishyam 3,’ starring Mohanlal and Meena. Reports said her film commitments influenced her decision.Former office bearer Baburaj accused the current leadership of damaging AMMA’s reputation. He also claimed those who came in under women’s empowerment had hurt welfare work and stopped aid to struggling artists.
