Bangladesh: Yunus aide quits amid unrest over Hadi’s death

Date:

DHAKA: One of Muhammad Yunus’s top aides on home affairs resigned from the interim government in the aftermath of mob violence in major cities of Bangladesh, including in Dhaka, following the death of radical leader Sharif Osman Hadi on December 18, six days after he was shot in the head. Officials said the resignation of Md Khuda Baksh Chowdhury, special assistant (ministry of home affairs) to the chief adviser, has been accepted. However, sources said he was “asked” to resign in the wake of attacks on media, minorities, cultural organisations and political workers over the last few days. Baksh’s resignation came on a day Osman’s brother Omar accused a section within the Yunus-headed interim govt of orchestrating the killing of the ‘July Uprising’ leader to derail the national election scheduled to be held on Feb 12.
