Actor Sushant Singh, who portrayed the character Tambe in ‘Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag’, a reimagining of the iconic ‘Sholay’, opened up about how the entire cast was convinced they were onto something groundbreaking. However, their ambition clashed with reality as the production faced legal hurdles and significant fines, resulting in a disappointing box office showing.

Ram Gopal Varma directed an unofficial remake of Ramesh Sippy’s 1975 film ‘Sholay’. However, he had to change the title after Ramesh Sippy’s production house objected to the use of the name ‘Sholay’. Hence, the makers of the new film changed the title to ‘Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag’. However, the movie failed miserably at the box office. Sushant Singh, who played the role of Tambe, the character inspired by Gabbar’s Sambha (played by Mac Mohan), recently talked about his experience working on the movie.

While speaking on the podcast Digital Commentary about ‘Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag’, Sushant Singh shared, “There’s a word in Urdu—bevakoof (foolish). We didn’t know whether we were fooling the audience or getting fooled ourselves.”The actor further shared that while shooting the movie, everyone felt like it was a “masterpiece.” He said that everything was quite “professional.” Singh stated that the entire set was covered so that anyone’s look would not be leaked to the press outside.In the film, Amitabh Bachchan played the role of Babban Singh (inspired by Gabbar Singh). Sushant Singh praised how the character of Big B in the new movie was envisioned. However, he acknowledged the fact that it was all in vain. He said, “But it was a disaster. I think while editing, even Ramu ji would’ve realized ki ismei toh lag gayi (that this has gone down the drain).”For the unversed, RGV’s production house had backed the film. And the company was fined a heavy sum of USD 1 million by the Delhi High Court for copyright infringement.

The cast included Amitabh Bachchan as Babban Singh, Mohanlal as Narsimha (inspired by Thakur), Ajay Devgn as Heerendra (inspired by Jai), JD Chakravarthy as Subbu (inspired by Veeru), Sushmita Sen as Durga (inspired by Radha), Nisha Kothari as Ghunroo (inspired by Basanti), and Rajpal Yadav as Ramabhai (inspired by Soorma Bhoopali).The recreated version of the song ‘Mehbooba Mehbooba’ starred Urmila Matondkar and Abhishek Bachchan.
