MEERUT: A Dalit post office employee in Bulandshahr allegedly ended his life by jumping in front of a train early Sunday morning, a day after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) questioned him in connection with a Rs 2.5 crore embezzlement case.
Rahul Kumar (28), a sub-postmaster at the Lakhaothi block post office and a resident of the Bulandshahr city area, was found dead on a railway track in the Girdhari Nagar area. Kumar was suspended on Nov 26 for “negligence in duty.” Shortly after, corruption allegations were levelled against him, leading to his interrogation by the CBI on Saturday.
His cousin, Ankit Kumar, said, “Rahul was under immense stress following the CBI interrogation. He believed that he wouldn’t be able to clear his name, which led him to take the extreme step.”
Police said that in a suicide note found in his pocket, Rahul claimed innocence and accused his colleagues of harassment and caste discrimination. He wrote: “A senior female colleague harassed me after I uncovered her extramarital affair within the office. She used casteist slurs and implicated me in the false corruption case.”
SP (city) Shanker Prasad said, “The allegations made in the suicide note are being investigated. The body was handed over to the family after a postmortem.”
This incident comes months after a similar case involving Tribhuvan Prasad Singh (55), superintendent of the Bulandshahr head post office. Singh shot himself with a rifle on Aug 21 at his residence in Suraksha Vihar Colony, Aligarh, a day after a CBI raid at the post office.
The raidwas part of an investigation into corruption complaints against Singh. Before his death, he shared a suicide note on his official letterhead in a WhatsApp group. The note addressed to Aligarh SSP read: “Ever since I took charge as the post office superintendent on Dec 16, 2021, I was harassed by my colleagues. They pressured me to commit irregularities and threatened me. Fed up with this, I am ending my life. These people should be held responsible for my death.”
