Director responds to mixed audience reaction
Fans of Rajinikanth welcomed the massy action entertainer with open arms, but some viewers felt the film lacked depth. Director Lokesh Kanagaraj addressed these reactions at a conclave organised by SSVM Institutions in Coimbatore. He said he was thankful for the love the audience had shown, “In Coolie, I never mentioned time travel or LCU. But these things were discussed and speculated even before I released the film’s trailer. 18 months before the film’s release, they kept asking how long I would hide these details. How can I stop that? I can’t.” Lokesh explained that the speculation about ‘Coolie’ being part of a time travel story or his cinematic universe came from fans, not from him.
Lokesh shares thoughts on audience expectations
The director went on to say that he cannot create stories based only on what the audience expects of him. He said, “But I can never write stories based on higher expectations. I write a story…if it meets their expectations, I’m good. If it doesn’t, I will try—that’s it.” With a smile, he admitted he was currently “struggling” with the universe he had already created and said his focus now was on the LCU, rather than starting any new universes.
Star-studded cast and film’s storyline
‘Coolie’ brings together a star-studded line-up, including Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, Rachita Ram, Upendra, and Aamir Khan. The story follows Deva, a former coolie union leader, who goes on a mission to uncover the truth behind the sudden death of his friend.
