Days after mob lynching, Mangaluru tense, sees another killing: Murder accused Suhas Shetty hacked to death | Mangaluru News

Date:

MANGALURU: Days after a mob-lynching incident in Kudupu, Mangaluru witnessed another act of violence as a 30-year-old man, Suhas Shetty, was hacked to death in Bajpe on Thursday. In response, Mangaluru City Police have imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to prevent further unrest.
The restrictions will be in place from 6 am on May 2 to 6 am on May 6 across the Mangaluru Police Commissionerate limits. City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal stated that gatherings of more than five people are prohibited during this period. The order also bans shouting slogans, carrying weapons or explosives, delivering provocative speeches, using abusive language, targeting government officials or institutions, and holding protests. However, events organised by the government are exempt.
Suhas Shetty was one of the accused in the July 2022 murder of Mohammed Fazil, a 23-year-old resident of Mangalapete in Katipalla. Fazil’s killing had triggered significant tensions across the coastal belt.
On Thursday around 8:27 pm, Suhas Shetty was travelling with his associates — Sanjay, Prajwal, Anvith, Latheesh, and Shashank — when their vehicle was intercepted near Kinnipadavu Cross by a group of assailants in a Swift car and a pickup truck. The attackers, reportedly six in number, assaulted Shetty with deadly weapons, causing severe injuries. He was rushed to AJ Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.
A case has been registered at the Bajpe Police Station. Police have formed multiple teams to track down the assailants.
Shetty was a known rowdy-sheeter with five criminal cases — four in Mangaluru City and one in Dakshina Kannada district.
