Dhanteras 2025: Significance
Dhanteras is one of the major festival which is celebrated in the month of Kartik during Amavasya. The Sanskrit terms “Dhan,” which means wealth, and “Teras,” which means the thirteenth day and when they combine with each other that becomes Dhanteras. According to the Hindu Scriptures, Lord Dhanvantari carried the Amrit Kalash (pot of nectar) out of the ocean of milk (Ksheer Sagar) during the Samudra Manthan (cosmic churning of the ocean). Lord Dhanvantri is the God of medicine and God of Ayurveda and people who worship him with devotion get good health and vitality.
Honoring Maa Lakshmi
It is also believed that Goddess Lakshmi also appeared from milky ocean, who is the consort of Lord Vishnu and known as the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Diwali festivities begin from this day so it is important to worship Goddess Lakshmi on this particular day. They perform various puja rituals to invite Goddess Lakshmi into their homes.
Purchasing Gold and Silver
It is highly auspicious to purchase gold, silver, or utensils on Dhanteras is also thought to bring luck and prosperity. Inviting wealth and making sure the household never experiences scarcity are symbolized by these purchases.
Yama Deepam
On this auspicious day, devotees offer prayers to Lord Yama, the god of death and light a diya with mustard oil on this particular day of Dhanteras and keep it outside home in the south direction.
