Films that courted controversy for hurting religious sentiments

Date:

Nayanthara’s film ‘Annapoorani’ stirred up controversy following its OTT release, leading to its removal from the streaming platform in India. Directed by Nilesh Krishnaa, the film depicts a young woman aspiring to be the country’s best chef, requiring her to cook non-vegetarian food. This seemingly offended some Hindu groups who filed FIRs against the team and called for the film’s immediate ban.

The backlash prompted Nayanthara to issue an apology, in a statement that read, “It aimed to mirror life’s journey, where we learn that obstacles can be overcome with sheer willpower… In our sincere attempt to share a positive message, we may have inadvertently caused hurt.”
