In a statement released through her son, Sajeeb Wazed, Hasina remarked, “The Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, under whose leadership we have gained self-esteem as an independent nation, got self-identity and got an independent country, has been grossly insulted.They insulted the blood of millions of martyrs. I want justice from the countrymen,” she said.
Hasina continued, “Since July, the violence, arson, and terrorism disguised as protests have claimed many innocent lives. I express my condolences and prayers for the victims, including students, teachers, police officers, a pregnant policewoman, journalists, cultural workers, professionals, Awami League members and their affiliates, pedestrians, and those working in various institutions who have suffered from this terror.”
“I offer my sympathy to those who, like me, are grieving the loss of loved ones. I call for a thorough investigation into these acts of murder and terrorism, and for the perpetrators to be identified and punished accordingly,” she added.
Hasina also urged the people of Bangladesh to observe National Mourning Day on August 15 in honor of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s assassination anniversary.
“I ask you to mark August 15 with appropriate solemnity and respect. Please lay floral tributes and offer prayers at Bangabandhu Bhaban, and remember the souls of all the martyrs,” she said.
Meanwhile, Prof Muhammad Yunus led interim government announced after a meeting that there would be no national holiday on August 15, the Daily Star reported.
“The decision to cancel the national holiday on August 15 was taken unanimously after a discussion with the council of advisers and political parties,” said a press release sent from the Chief Adviser’s Office.
