In the countdown to its release into theatres, “Jana Nayagan” is creating box-office history with phenomenal pre-release advance booking. The Vijay starrer is a blockbuster, both with insane hype and the importance of being the superstar’s last film before diving headfirst into politics. With three days left for the release, the film has already surpassed the astronomical 50 crores mark in pre-release ticket sales globally, posing to make Tamil cinema history with an opening day grosser.
Overseas markets explode with record-breaking advance bookings
The overseas markets, in particular, have gone into overdrive. A report in Pinkvilla states that the film has racked up more than USD 4 million in global advance ticket sales, with the opening day alone accounting for around USD 3.30 million. Traditional bastions like Malaysia and Europe are experiencing unprecedented levels of business with ‘Jana Nayagan’ clocking in some of the biggest advances for a Tamil and really the biggest Tamil advance for an Indian film. In the USA, the Vijay-starrer is said to be outpacing Prabhas ‘The RajaSaab’, even though both films get released on the same date with the advancement mainly because of the Telugu and Tamil NRI audience.
Malaysia leads the surge as ticket sales shatter existing benchmarks
Malaysia has delivered one of the most striking examples of this frenzy. The film had been released for advance booking a day prior, with 50,000 tickets sold in the first hour. Nearing the 100,000 mark by day’s end for Day 1, a rarity, usually reserved for closer to the end of advance booking. Not far off, Jana Nayagan crossed the 100,000-tickets mark within a day, with three more days left for sales to close. Singapore and Sri Lanka still have to open up for bookings, and it’s expected that the same will be witnessed there, too, when bookings are opened.
A potential historical Pongal opening
Back home, the numbers are equally formidable. Domestic pre-sales are approximately ₹15 crores, primarily due to first-day demand. Karnataka is witnessing robust pre-sales, while Tamil Nadu, with pre-sales not yet fully operational, is generating positive interest in areas where booking has commenced. Despite competition potentially hindering James Bond’s chances for record-breaking numbers in Tamil Nadu, the Pongal holiday period ensures continued momentum. As Vijay has ruled the Tamil box office for over a decade, and if these early numbers are any indication, ‘Jana Nayagan’ is gearing up to deliver a thunderous farewell one that could shake the box office long after the first show begins.
