Judi Dench, the ‘Skyfall’ actress, revealed that she struggles to recognise people due to her eye condition. Expressing the reason for leaving the film industry, the 90-year-old said that she cannot read, watch television, or people, perceiving just the outline of an object or a body.

Talking about the struggles, Dench explained how her deteriorating eyesight has caused her to put extra effort into identifying people. When asked about the heartwrenching step back from the cameras, she said, “I can’t see. I’ve got, you know, that thing,” while having a conversation with ITV News. As Ian McKellen jested about how her vision has not stopped the audience from seeing her. The ‘Philomena’ actress continued, “Yes, and I can see your outline, and I know you so well. But I can’t recognize anybody now. … I can’t see the television, I can’t see to read.” Quipping about the situation, McKellen asked whether she goes to people and says, “So nice to see you again.” Giving back the humorous energy, she claimed, “Sometimes.”Previously, Dench opened up about her condition in 2023 on ‘The Graham Norton Show.’ The ‘Notes on a Scandal’ actress expressed that she only remembers the line because of her photographic memory. Claiming that she could do the whole ‘Twelfth Night’ right now, Dench said that she needs a machine that could tell her lines and where they appear on the page.

In 2012, Judi Dench was diagnosed with an eyesight issue called Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), as per The Daily Mirror. Due to the condition, she had to take help from other people to continue with her professional life – who are usually her daughter or agent. “The most distressing thing is in a restaurant in the evening, I can’t see the person I’m having dinner with,” she added.
