Pop star Katy Perry and CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King kissed the ground as soon as they returned from their space trip aboard Blue Origin’s Shepard rocket on Monday morning.
Part of the all-female crew, the two immediately dropped to their knees upon exiting the capsule, expressing their joy at being back on Earth after the exhilarating journey.
“That was amazing,” King exclaimed, letting out a relieved sigh.
Perry, holding a daisy pointed toward the sky as a tribute to her daughter Daisy Dove Bloom, couldn’t stop smiling after the 11-minute space tourism flight. Perry described the trip as “the highest high,” adding, “I couldn’t recommend this experience more.”
Perry, the first pop star to sing in space, opted to perform Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” during the historic flight instead of one of her own songs.
Perry explained that the experience wasn’t about her singing her own songs but about the collective energy shared during the flight. She emphasized that it was about creating space for future women, feeling a sense of belonging, and appreciating the beautiful world they could see from space. She also mentioned that the entire journey was for the benefit of Earth.
Perry mentioned that she plans to write a new song inspired by her unique space journey. King, too, described the experience as life-changing.
Sanchez described the experience as incredibly peaceful and quiet, emphasizing how it served as a reminder for everyone to strive to be better human beings. She expressed how surreal it was to see the Moon and how quiet the Earth appeared from space.
Nguyen, Flynn, and Bowe were overcome with emotion, with Nguyen sharing that the journey was a chance for her to heal from the trauma of a past sexual assault that had affected her STEM studies.
Nguyen expressed deep gratitude to everyone who made the space journey possible. Flynn celebrated the moment with excitement, proudly saying, “This mum went to space.” Bowe reflected on the life-changing experience, sharing, “I will never be the same. There are no boundaries, no borders—just Earth.”
