KOLKATA: Upasana — the prime suspect in the murder of her husband in Baguiati — was earlier accused in connection with her former husband’s death in Gobordanga, where she was named in an FIR for abetment to suicide. This time, she has been on the run for three days, since the murder of her husband Bhola Halder.Police said in the earlier case a few years ago, Upasana was named in the FIR lodged by the man’s family members after his death.Neighbours at Jagatpur Charaktala in Baguiati, where Halder, a temporary worker at Kolkata airport was living in a rented flat with Upasana, noticed a burning smell coming from their room around midday on Wednesday. When the landlord’s family went in, they saw Upasana burning papers. On being questioned, she claimed her husband had gone to work. Moments later, she fled the house.Locals entered the flat and found Halder’s body in the bathroom, bearing multiple stab injuries. Cops were called and Halder was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. A sickle, suspected to be the murder weapon, was found beside the body. Officers said forensic experts collected evidence from the spot, including the weapon, charred paper, and blood samples. On Thursday, Bidhannagar cops arrested Subha Rajbangshi alias Potla, identified as Upasana’s paramour, for his alleged involvement in the crime. Cops said Rajbangshi provided the sickle used in the murder. He was remanded in police custody for 10 days. “Evidence suggests Rajbangshi supplied the weapon and was aware of Upasana’s plan,” said an officer. Police are also probing if he played a direct role in the killing.According to neighbours, the couple fought frequently, and their arguments were often loud enough to be heard across the locality. The landlord reportedly asked them to vacate the premises due to repeated disturbances.Investigators said this was the couple’s second marriage. Halder left his first wife and family before moving in with Upasana. In recent months, he expressed a desire to return to his first household, which led to repeated quarrels, police said.Police said they secured CCTV footage showing Upasana boarding a bus headed towards Ultadanga shortly after leaving the house on Wednesday morning. The footage was captured minutes after locals saw her walking away from the flat. During background checks, police traced Upasana’s roots to Gobordanga and officers found she was accused in the death of her former husband. Cops said she then fled to Kashmir and came back after 10 months, when she was arrested. The case went to trial, and she secured bail. An officer said: “The evidence so far points to a planned murder. The role of the wife is central, and her previous history adds weight to our suspicion. Our teams are on the lookout for her.”
