Margao: Kulsum Bi Shaikh is going places. The Goan coach, who was assistant coach of a men’s team in the Goa Professional League, has now moved to Philippines where she has been appointed as the assistant coach of the U-17 women’s football team.Philippines started their AFC U-17 Women’s Asia Cup 2026 qualifiers with a big 5-0 win against Syria in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on Monday.“I’m beyond happy and emotional at the same time,” Kulsum told TOI after the game. “It’s truly a special moment for me to be part of an international side in a coaching capacity.”There are no notable Indian women’s football coaches who have taken international jobs, managed national teams or major overseas clubsFor her breakthrough, Kulsum has a familiar face to thank. It’s Pradhyum Reddy, who has left his post as Dempo CEO to take up the Philippines U-17 women’s head coach job.“I thank coach Pradhyum for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. This journey means a lot, and I’m really looking forward to giving my best and learning every single day,” said Kulsum. From a player to coach, Kulsum is making the shift seamlessly. Last season, the Taleigao resident interned with both the India U-17 and U-20 women’s team.Currently, she is contracted with Indian Women’s League (IWL) side Sethu FC as the head of women’s football and thanks her club for allowing her to take up the short project, before rejoining Sethu.“Coaching outside India is definitely a different experience. You get to see new cultures, playing styles, and approaches to the game, which really broadens your perspective as a coach. It’s been a great learning experience for me so far. Overall, it’s helping me grow both professionally and personally,” said Kulsum. Her focus is now firmly on Philippines, helping the national team during the qualifiers. Depending on the team’s progress, her role could be extended.“Over the years, my perception of coaching has evolved a lot. When I first started, it was mostly about tactics, drills, and performance. But with time and experience in different roles and clubs, I’ve realized coaching is much deeper,” said Kulsum.
