SHILLONG: A decomposed body of a Hungarian tourist, Zolt Puskas, was discovered in a forest within Meghalaya‘s East Khasi Hills district after being missing for around two weeks, police officials confirmed on Friday.
The tourist was travelling to visit the famous double-decker root bridge at Nongriat, situated 20 km south of Sohra town.
His decomposed body was found on Thursday in an isolated forest region near Ramdait village along the pathway to Nongriat.
Following a missing complaint filed by the Hungarian Embassy on March 29 and subsequent FIR registration on April 2, authorities initiated a search operation alongside local residents and social organisation members.
Records show Puskas had briefly stayed at a Shillong city hotel early on March 29, departing by 9 am via local taxi towards Sohra town.
The taxi service confirmed dropping Puskas at Mawsahew village, from where he continued alone towards Nongriat through Mawkawir, carrying only a backpack. He travelled without a tourist guide.
Police discovered his decomposed remains on Thursday afternoon in Ramdait forest area. Officials believe he might have accidentally slipped and fallen, resulting in his death.
The authorities have commenced a detailed investigation into the incident.
