The debate surrounding male superstars pairing with much younger female actors has brought ageism in the entertainment industry into the spotlight. Recently, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal shared his perspective, emphasizing that an actor’s choices should be driven by confidence rather than age.
In an interview with India Today, Mohanlal highlighted that confidence and audience acceptance are far more important than age when it comes to choosing such roles. He explained that the trend of pairing male superstars with much younger female actors is part of a larger cycle in the industry, not a new phenomenon. He emphasised that age should not be a barrier if an actor is healthy and confident. The choice of a role depends on the actor’s comfort and the audience’s acceptance, and it’s ultimately about the performance, not age.
After a career spanning over four decades, Mohanlal made his directorial debut with the film Barroz.
When asked about his future plans, Mohanlal expressed that he doesn’t like to plan. He prefers to let things happen naturally, focusing on his ongoing projects like plays, shows, and films. He believes in embracing the flow of life and simply being present in the moment.
Released on Christmas, Barroz is a 3D Malayalam fantasy film about a ghost who has guarded Vasco da Gama’s treasure in Goa for 400 years. He waits for the rightful heir to free him. In 2025, Mohanlal has several films lined up, including L360 (tentative), Thudarum, L2: Empuraan, Kannappa, and Ram.
