PUNE: While the state assembly elections in Maharashtra are just around the corner, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SCP) has approached the Supreme Court, requesting to freeze the NCP’s original ‘Clock’ symbol till the case is pending in the Apex Court. NCP (SCP) working president Supriya Sule said that her party has requested the court to allot a new symbol to Ajit Pawar’s party till the case is pending in the court.
Speaking to the media in Pune about her party’s request to the Supreme Court, Supriya said, “We have requested the court that till the time the case goes to its logical conclusion and till the time all the confusion ends, both factions should get a new symbol. We have already got a new symbol and similarly, the other side also should be given a new symbol.”
NCP (SCP) fought the Lok Sabha election on a new symbol and now ahead of the assembly polls in Maharashtra, the party is seeking Supreme Court’s directions on its request. “We are hoping that the decision on our request will come early. We have already faced injustice in the Lok Sabha where there was confusion among voters over the party’s symbol. The next hearing of the case is on Wednesday,” Supriya said.
Sharad Pawar’s party has challenged the Election Commission of India’s order in the Supreme Court after it allotted the original party name and symbol to the Ajit Pawar faction following the split in NCP.
“Sharad Pawar is the founder member of NCP and it is his party. As per the party’s constitution, founder members and the president of the party have the authority to take party-related decisions. Unfortunately, the invisible power at the centre sidelined that constitution and handed over the party name and symbol to the other camp. Our party is now going on in the court,” Supriya said.
