VELLORE: A 43-year-old man branded his 10-year-old son with hot knife across his body for not waking up on time to go to school at Kolimedu village in Vellore district. The man, identified as N Poovarasan, a farmer, was arrested.Gudiyatham taluk inspector C Sivasankar said neighbours reported that Poovarasan frequently abused his son and used lit candles to burn him.Poovarasan and his wife, Aimaavathi, have been living separately due to marital disputes. While she stayed at her parent’s home, Poovarasan lived with their son, a Class IV student studying in a private school in Nelloorpettai near Gudiyatham. The inspector said the man hurt the child to vent out his anger for his wife.He said the branding incident took place on Thursday when the sleeping boy refused to wake up for school. Enraged, Poovarasan heated a small knife and pressed it on the boy’s hands, legs, and thighs. The boy screamed in pain, and the sound alerted his grandfather, N Natarajan, who rushed to the boy’s rescue.Natarajan, with the help of neighbours, took him to Gudiyatham GH, where he is undergoing treatment. Poovarasan threatened his father and neighbours not to reveal the incident to the police.As the news about the man’s brutality spread, Gudiyatham taluk police registered a case against Poovarasan and arrested him. He was produced before a local court, which remanded him in judicial custody on Friday.
