The Indian film and television fraternity gathered in Mumbai on October 17 to pay tribute to veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, who passed away a day earlier at the age of 68. A prayer meet was organised by the Dheer family, bringing together colleagues, friends, and admirers who came to honour the late actor’s legacy and immense contribution to Indian cinema.
Jackie Shroff ’s reminder to the media
During the memorial service, Jackie Shroff gently reminded photographers to maintain decorum and empathy while covering such sensitive moments. When a cameraman moved too close, Jackie calmly remarked, “Tu samajhdar hai na? Tere ghar pe aisa huwa toh…” (You’re wise, right? If something like this happened at your home…). His words resonated with many present, reflecting the need for compassion during moments of grief.The emotional gathering saw attendance from several industry veterans including Rohit Shetty, Sharad Saxena, Suresh Oberoi, Esha Deol, Zayed Khan, Tanvi Azmi, Mohit Raina, Aditya Pancholi, Mukesh Rishi, Puneet Issar, Ashok Pandit, and Mukesh Khanna. Also present were Johnny Lever, Ramesh Taurani, Ranjeet, Rajat Bedi, Sheeba with husband Akashdeep, and others who came to offer their final respects.

Known for his dignified persona and warmth, Pankaj Dheer was best remembered for his iconic portrayal of Karna in B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharat. Over his four-decade career, he worked across television and films, earning respect as one of the most versatile and dependable performers of his generation.Apart from Mahabharat, Dheer featured in notable TV shows like Chandrakanta, Bado Bahu, and Sasural Simar Ka. On the big screen, he left a mark with memorable performances in Baadshah, Soldier, and Zameen, among others.
A family of performers
Pankaj Dheer is survived by his wife Anita Dheer, son Nikitin Dheer, daughter-in-law Kratika Sengar, and granddaughter Devika. Nikitin, who followed in his father’s footsteps, is best known for his role as Thangabali in Chennai Express. Kratika, too, is a well-known television actress.While the exact cause of Pankaj Dheer’s death remains unconfirmed, reports suggest he had been battling cancer and underwent surgery before his passing. Despite his health challenges, the actor continued working, embodying the same dedication and strength that defined his long and illustrious career.
