Some of the accused men booked for allegedly drinking in public areas

Bhubaneswar: Ahead of the festive season, Puri police have intensified efforts to curb alcohol consumption in public places, with about 100 men booked for allegedly drinking in public areas, particularly near the beach, in the past two days.Puri SP Prateek Singh said the initiative aims to ensure the safety and convenience of both tourists and locals. Legal proceedings were initiated against the drunk men, with prosecution reports being sent to the local court.“We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards people causing disturbance in public spaces and harassing tourists after consuming alcohol. All police stations have been directed to enhance their enforcement measures against such behaviour,” the SP said.He also mandated increased night patrols and raids in secluded public areas known for frequent alcohol consumption. Beyond the beaches, police have identified hotspots near parks, bus stops, footpaths and behind closed shops at night. Police sources said those booked included students, company employees and small business owners. They reportedly avoided bars due to the cost and instead purchased liquor from outlets, opting for secluded spots to drink with friends.Hoteliers demanded the continuation of the crackdown beyond the festive period. “The beaches often become a drinking haven for locals, particularly criminal elements, jeopardising tourist safety. We frequently notice a lack of police presence on the beaches,” said a hotelier.A beachside shopkeeper expressed relief at the increased police activity. “Previously, raids were infrequent, and drunkards would pressure me to keep my shop open late for water and cigarettes. Although there were a few raids months ago, the situation reverted back quickly. We hope the initiative continues,” he said, requesting anonymity.Police encouraged citizens to report instances of public drinking and related disturbances. “Following the crackdown, people may relocate their activities. We urge the public to notify us if they witness alcohol consumption in public areas,” a police officer advised.
