Relief for Rahul Gandhi; Supreme Court stays defamation case for remarks on Amit Shah | India News

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s plea quashing to case filed against him in Jharkhand.
The apex court stayed proceedings against Rahul for allegedly making a defamatory remark on Union minister Amit Shah during 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
A bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta sought the responses of Jharkhand government and the complainant to the plea filed by Gandhi seeking quashing of the case.
A BJP functionary, Navin Jha, had filed the petition, claiming Rahul had remarked at a Congress meeting in Delhi that a murderer could become party president in BJP, but it was not possible in Congress. Jha alleged that Rahul had also made insulting comments against BJP, which had hurt its image.
The court had taken cognizance of the matter and started proceedings, prompting Rahul to approach the HC, which barred coercive action against him till further orders. On Feb 16, HC finally dismissed Rahul’s petition seeking quashing of the case.
