Beloved actor Satish Shah breathed his last, at 74, at Mumbai’s Hinduja Hospital after his health took a turn and his kidneys failed. Satish Shah wasn’t just another actor — he was a master of comic timing, and someone whose work spanned decades across film and television. He began his career way back in the 70s, but he truly etched his name in history with standout roles in the 80s and beyond. In the 1984 sitcom Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi he played 55 different characters across its 55 episodes — an incredible feat that got people talking. And of course his portrayal of Indravadhan Sarabhai in the cult series Sarabhai vs Sarabhai remains iconic. That role alone cemented his status as one of Indian television’s funniest and most cherished actors. Reports confirm that Satish Shah’s death was caused by kidney failure. He was rushed to hospital after experiencing discomfort at home, but sadly his condition deteriorated rapidly.
Kidney failure – what is it, and what signs to watch for
Kidney failure happens when the kidneys lose their ability to filter waste and excess fluid from the blood. Left untreated, it’s serious. It can happen slowly (chronic) or quickly (acute). Here are a few key signs and symptoms you should know:
- Feeling unusually tired, weak or having low energy.
- Swelling of ankles, feet, or around the eyes because fluid is building up.
- Changes in urine output — either more or less than usual, or the urine appears foamy or has blood.
- Loss of appetite, feeling nauseous, or vomiting.
- Persistent itchiness or dry, flaky skin.
- Difficulty catching your breath, especially when lying down (fluid in lungs).
Some of the most common underlying causes include long-standing high blood pressure, uncontrolled diabetes, repeated kidney infections, or obstructive issues like kidney stones.
