Mira Nair is moving ahead rapidly with her latest film, a biographical portrayal of the celebrated 20th-century artist Amrita Sher-Gil. There’s talk that Tabu might join the cast for a significant cameo role in the movie, provisionally titled ‘Amri’. If confirmed, this would be her third collaboration with Nair, following their work together on ‘The Namesake’ and ‘A Suitable Boy’.

A long-time vision coming to life

The biopic on Amrita Sher-Gil has been a long-cherished project of Mira Nair, initially announced in 2020 following the premiere of ‘A Suitable Boy’. According to Mid-day, Mira Nair has previously spoken about spending four years persuading the market to back the period drama, which is set between 1915 and 1941, and spans India, Hungary, and France. The inclusion of a respected actor like Tabu will further up the ante.

Casting developments and timeline

Despite ongoing uncertainty about the lead role, with Tanya Maniktala denying that she has been cast as the protagonist, the casting process for Mira Nair’s biopic is intensifying. It is reported that the film will feature a large ensemble of over 15 actors from the Hindi film industry. The final lineup is expected to be finalized by December, with the filmmaker aiming to start shooting by March 2026.

Tabu’s versatility and recent work

On the professional front, Tabu’s career showcases her remarkable talent, with standout roles in diverse genres such as the thriller ‘Crew’ and the comedy-horror ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’. Recently, she appeared in the romantic thriller ‘Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha’, directed by Neeraj Pandey, marking her ninth collaboration with actor Ajay Devgn.
