When Amrita Singh gave Saif Ali Khan sleeping pills without telling him on Sooraj Barjatya’s advice

Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh’s love story was once the talk of the town. The dashing young Nawab and the experienced Bollywood star surprised everyone when they tied the knot in October 1991. Saif was just 20, while Amrita was already a well-known name in the industry. What started as a fairytale romance, however, eventually took a rocky turn, one that even affected Saif’s work on film sets.Sleepless Saif struggled on setIn an old interview, as reported by BollywoodShaadis, director Sooraj Barjatya opened up about Saif Ali Khan’s troubled days during the filming of ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain‘. Known for his calm nature and family-centric films, Barjatya recalled that Saif’s mind was clearly somewhere else.“Saif Ali Khan’s personal life had a lot of ups and downs during the shooting of ‘Hum Saath Saath Hai’. So he was always under tension,” the director said.The pressure of his personal problems began to show, especially during the filming of the wedding number ‘Suno Ji Dulhan’. “There is an anecdote about the time of the song ‘Suno ji Dulhan’ in the film. Saif Ali Khan was taking many retakes during the shooting of this song. He was not sleeping all night, thinking about how to portray the character in a good way. I came to know this when I talked to his first wife,” Barjatya explained.The secret sleeping pill solutionSeeing Saif struggle, Barjatya decided to do something unexpected. He spoke to Amrita, hoping to help Saif find some peace of mind, even if it meant using a trick. The director shared, “As he was not sleeping through the night, I gave Amrita a piece of advice. Amrita was advised to give him sleeping pills without Saif’s knowledge. She gave him sleeping pills without his knowledge.” And it worked like magic. The next day, Saif surprised everyone on set with his performance.“So many of his scenes were arranged the next day. He did it. The song gave a very good shot in one take. Everyone was shocked as he gave a very good shot.”While Amrita may have supported Saif quietly behind the scenes, their marriage was heading towards an end. After 13 years together, the couple called it quits in 2004.
