Why is Anthony Fauci calling Trump’s injuries ‘superficial’?

Date:

Dr Anthony Fauci, the former advisor to both Trump and Biden during the COVID-19 pandemic seems to have played down the severity of former President Donald Trump’s injuries from the recent assassination bid, describing the ear wound he received as “superficial,” CNN reported.
In an interview with CNN, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, addressed the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, saying, “From what we’ve seen and heard, it was a bullet that grazed his ear and injured it.According to the physicians who examined him, there was no further damage.”
Fauci said he believes Trump is “in the clear” based on the physician’s report and Trump’s actions since the incident, including his arrival at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee two days later. “It seems to have been a superficial wound to the ear, and that’s all,” Fauci added.
However, CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr Sanjay Gupta offered a different perspective earlier on Friday, suggesting that Trump might be experiencing “psychological trauma” following the shooting, which resulted in one rallygoer dead and two others seriously injured. Gupta advocated for a “full public assessment” of Trump’s injuries to inform voters about his condition, noting that the campaign has not disclosed the nature of Trump’s medical treatment or plans to monitor his health in the coming weeks.
“The concern is that gunshot blasts near the head can cause injuries that aren’t immediately noticeable, such as bleeding in or on the brain, damage to the inner ear, or even psychological trauma,” Gupta explained.
As a trauma neurosurgeon, he stressed that a “thorough evaluation” following a gunshot wound could provide a clearer understanding of both physical and mental injuries, aiding in a quicker recovery.
“The good news is that most physical symptoms of an injury would probably have revealed themselves over the past few days,” Gupta concluded. “At this point, however, the Trump campaign hasn’t yet shared whether a full workup was done at the time or if there has been any follow-up since.”
During the campaign rally in Pennsylvania, Trump, 78, was grazed by a bullet fired by would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks. Trump dove to the ground when the gunfire erupted and was seen with blood streaming from his right ear, later appearing with a bandage over it.
