Drew Barrymore, the actress who never hides from vulnerability, opened up about he experience of being in rehab for nearly two years when she was 14. Discussing the grounds of similar experiences with her guest on the show, the 50-year-old recalled being a wayward teenager.

In the recent episode of ‘The Drew Barrymore Show,’ the renowned host was conversing with Mae Martin, who created and starred in the thriller series, ‘Wayward.’ The writer described that the script was loosely based on their experiences as a teenager, when they visited rehab at the age of 16, and their childhood friend, who was taken to one of the troubled teen institutions. Speaking about her life, Barrymore claimed, “I also was someone who got taken away and put in a place for two years.”After proclaiming that they didn’t know about each other’s experiences, the actress continued, “I had a lot of lightness in my experience in the institution. It’s a lot of what this show is. I know that sounds wild, but it was like encouragement to say your truth, to be brave, to find humor and heroism in your journey.” Claiming it was the best thing that had happened to her, Drew added that the experience was difficult and not at all easy.

About ‘Wayward’

Responding to the heartfelt note, Martin, who identifies as non-binary, said that they feel protective about young people as an adult now. Having been in a rehab, the creator went all into the series to draw nuanced emotions and detailed feelings. Released in September, the Netflix series revolves around a local cop who leads an investigation into a local troubled teen school, and the story might not be as charming as it may look on the surface.
