CHENNAI: A motor accident claims tribunal in Chennai has ordered a two-wheeler dealer, who allowed a new bike to be used on a public road without even having a temporary registration number, and the bike owner to pay a compensation of 97.18 lakh jointly to the family of a man who was fatally knocked down by the vehicle. Judge Dharmaprabhu passed the order awarding Rs 97.18 lakh as compensation to the family of Balamuthu Murugan, an assistant professor at Loyola College, who was killed in a road accident at Gummidipoondi in 2017.Murugan was riding his motorcycle when a newly purchased two-wheeler, driven rashly and negligently and coming in the opposite direction, collided with his vehicle, resulting in his death.His wife, children and mother moved the tribunal seeking a compensation of Rs 53 lakh. After examining the evidence, the tribunal enhanced the compensation to Rs 97.18 lakh. It further held that the dealer could not escape liability as the new vehicle had been permitted to ply on a public road without securing even a temporary registration, in violation of the law.The tribunal directed the vehicle owner and the dealer to jointly deposit the compensation amount within one month.
