Sweet treat chain Krispy Kreme has announced an urgent recall of one of its World Cup-themed doughnuts due to a deadly health risk. Shoppers have been warned: ‘do not eat’. Krispy Kreme has recalled one of its popular World Cup-inspired doughnuts. The recall affects the sweet treat chain’s Individual Pitch Perfect Doughnut and Match Day Dozen doughnuts. These products may contain hazelnuts (nuts), making them a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to hazelnuts, the Food Standards Agency said in an announcement dated 21 June.
How to identify the recalled product?
The recalled product is a doughnut topped with green and white icing to resemble a football pitch. These doughnuts were sold both as individual items and in larger bundled packs of 12, called the Match Day Dozen.In a recall notice, Krispy Kreme said the recall affects the Individual Pitch Perfect Doughnut purchased on 19 or 20 June. The affected Match Day Dozen has best-before dates of 21/06/2026 and 22/06/2026.So, chances are you might have bought the individual Pitch Perfect doughnuts on Friday or Saturday.The affected products were made at its Peterborough branch, which also supplies stores in Leicester, Nottingham, Ipswich, Norwich and Cambridge, as well as supermarkets in the area. “Items purchased from our other Krispy Kreme stores are not affected,” the company said. The recall is on a ‘precautionary basis’, it added.“Krispy Kreme takes its responsibilities to consumers extremely seriously and always aims to ensure the highest possible standards of product safety. We are sorry for any inconvenience or disappointment this product recall may cause you,” the company said.
What to do if you have the affected product?
If you have purchased the recalled product, do not eat it. Those with nut allergies should be extremely careful. Hazelnut allergies are a form of tree nut allergy. If consumed, those allergic to nuts can experience reactions ranging from mild oral itching and throat discomfort to severe anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical intervention. Symptoms typically appear within minutes to a few hours of consumption. These include swelling of the lips, mouth or throat, itching sensations, gastrointestinal distress, hives, respiratory difficulties or, in severe cases, a dramatic drop in blood pressure.
