A new trailer has been released for ‘Wicker’, an unconventional romantic fantasy comedy film starring Olivia Colman. The acclaimed actress, best known for her roles in ‘The Crown’ and various dramatic performances throughout her career, plays a lonely fisherwoman in this quirky fable set to arrive in theatres this October. The film, based on the short story ‘The Wicker Husband’ by Ursula Wills-Jones, tells the story of a woman who fashions herself a wicker husband with extraordinary and disruptive consequences for her small village. The trailer debuted ahead of the film’s theatrical release, offering audiences their first extended look at the darkly comedic and satirical story. The film, written and directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, also stars Alexander Skarsgård as the wicker husband and Peter Dinklage as the local basketmaker who creates him. Elizabeth Debicki rounds out the cast in this unique adaptation of the short story.

Olivia Colman plays lonely fisherwoman who creates wicker companion

Colman stars as a malodorous fisherwoman who commissions a husband to be made by the local basketmaker, played by Peter Dinklage. When her wicker husband, brought to life by Alexander Skarsgård, proves more spectacular than she ever imagined, his soulful spirit and unique prowess awaken something inside her, setting off a wave of jealousy, fascination and upheaval that threatens the very fabric of village life.

The trailer suggests a blend of dark comedy and satirical social commentary, with the ostracized local fisherwoman being told, “There’s absolutely no shame in living out your remaining days alone.” But she has other plans, fashioning herself an unconventional companion. One villager tells another, “I heard that he’s strong as a tree and just as hard.” Still, the fact that the husband is made of wicker becomes a point of contention within the community. “He has his days. I have mine,” the fisherwoman relays. “And we have our nights.” The film’s tagline, “a hard man is good to find,” plays on the absurdity of the premise while suggesting deeper themes about desire and belonging.

Olivia Colman praised the ‘Wicker’ script at Sundance

Olivia Colman told Deadline during the Sundance Film Festival in January, where the film premiered, “I think it’s in my top three favorite scripts I’ve ever read.” The film demonstrates the continued appeal of distinctive character-driven stories that challenge conventional storytelling within the indie film space. Her endorsement of the script underscores the quality and originality of the material adapted from Wills-Jones’ short story.
