Sasaram: The medical officer in charge of the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Shivsagar in Rohtas district was arrested on Wednesday after excise officials allegedly found him intoxicated and in possession of multiple liquor bottles inside his govt residence located within the hospital campus.The arrested doctor has been identified as Dr Abhishek Kundan, who was serving as the in charge medical officer at the Shivsagar PHC.According to civil surgeon Dr Maniraj Ranjan, the health department had received repeated complaints over the past several days that Dr Kundan had stopped attending to patients, citing ill health. Concerned over his prolonged absence from duty, the civil surgeon visited the doctor’s official residence situated on the PHC premises to assess his condition.During the visit, Dr Ranjan allegedly found the doctor in an intoxicated state. Liquor bottles were reportedly lying in the room. The civil surgeon further alleged that when questioned, the doctor behaved in an inappropriate manner.Following the incident, Dr Ranjan informed the excise department, after which a team of excise officials, accompanied by local police from Shivsagar police station, conducted a search of the residence. The team allegedly recovered several liquor bottles and arrested the doctor under the provisions of prohibition law.Calling the incident “extremely unfortunate,” the civil surgeon said the conduct of a govt doctor entrusted with public healthcare responsibilities raises serious concerns. The arrest has sparked widespread discussion in the area, especially as Bihar continues to enforce a complete ban on the manufacture, sale, possession and consumption of alcohol.Further investigation is underway.
