Transformer burnt in tourist car crash

Calangute: A roadside electricity department transformer at Naika Vaddo, Calangute, was gutted after a Gujarat-registered car driven by a tourist crashed into it in the early hours of Thursday, sparking a fire. The incident occurred just after 4am. Pilerne fire station officials said they received a call at 4.30am following which they rushed to the spot on the Calangute-Candolim road, and extinguished the fire which had already been brought under control.The car driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and first hit a parked car before crashing into the transformer. One of the occupants of the Gujarat car was hurt.In another incident in the early hours of Thursday, a two-wheeler crashed into a group of tourists that was walking across the Baga-Arpora road, causing injuries to five tourists. Police have registered two cases against those involved.
